I've made a site specific installation for the exhibition of the scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Rome in the summer of 2009. The title of the exhibition was Il Muro (The Wall), in connection with the 20th anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin Wall. My original idea was to glue on the wall some of my wallpaper works, but I’ve been told that you can’t even nail anything onto it, not to mention gluing, because the building (Villa Falconieri) is a national monument. So I decided to make a work that won’t even touch the wall, but protect it.
The work I’ve made is a white board made of wood on tiny wheels. Its sides are painted red to imitate the sign used in museums and galleries that keep away the visitors from the artworks. The object has a protecting function, so I installed it 1-2 cm away to not to touch the wall. Even its wheels are parallel to it for if someone accidentally pushes the board it won’t touch the wall. I wanted to protect that wall but the object I’ve made is mobile, it could be installed to any other wall in Rome, because in this town they can find something under any building that could turn the wall into a monument.
