For MAMŰ's Ugly Artworks, RANDOM 2 exhibition I've made a machine drawing.
Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617) was one of the most influential graphic artists of his age. I’ve transformed the brush drawing made of his own hand.
This artwork can be interpreted as a kind of self-portrayal of himself. Goltzius burned both hands in an accident, and after that he could never fully stretch out the right one. He made all his engravings and drawings with that crippled hand. In the tiny drawing he portrayed the hand, realistically, documenting the distortions, with some manneristic exaggerations.
Like of many artists’ of his age, Goltzius's drawings and paintings were serialized (by the use of engraving and etching) and sold by his own workshop. The replicated graphics made it possible for a unique painting or drawing (even sculpture) to reach the widest possible audience.
The drawing I made was created by a Kongsberg XE-10 machine. Based on the picture of Goltzius I made a simplified digital version that lacks the sensitivity of the original lines (they have only one weight) but allows easy, unlimited number of duplicates in any size. The original work is being transformed here as well as the works produced by the workshop.
